A bit of sad news

Written by Maggie Kimmitt on January 25, 2018

We learned just recently that Mrs. Gertrude Leviton, former owner of Gala Spinaway, passed away on January 12 at age 97. Mrs. Leviton and her late husband, Leonard “Skip” Leviton, were Graham’s first owners when he began his training career after the death of Maryland trainer Bernie Bond. Gala Spinaway, now 30, became Graham’s first stakes winner and still lives with us here at Fair Hill. He and Eclipse champion Main Sequence spend their days in the paddock which Gala previously shared with Better Talk Now.

The Levitons stayed in touch and remained enthusiastic and loyal supporters of all things Herringswell throughout their retirement in Atlantic City, NJ. When Skip Leviton passed away in December, 2015 at age 100, he and Gertrude had been married for 75 years.

Below are photos taken of the Levitons with Gala at Better Talk Now’s retirement party in May, 2010. We are certainly thankful to have had this wonderful couple in our lives for so many years.

  1. Great that you stayed in touch with one of your early owners. She must have been quite a lady.
Bernie & Bose Bibd were friends of my parents!
