2nd day wrap up

Today was just as exciting as yesterday with Groupie Doll asserting herself as top of her group, Shanghai Bobby winning his 1 1/16 mile race with amazingly fast fractions, Mizdirection winning her race, making it the longest lay off for any horse to win a Breeders Cup.

That got me thinking of Animal Kingdom…………laid off for a lot longer.  With a cleaner trip who knows.  That’s racing luck of course and if anyone were to beat us Wise Dan was a very popular winner for both horse (who has dominated the mile scene this year on every surface possible) and his low-key trainer Charles Lopresti who only has about 20 horses in training.  He broke the track record and was only .5 seconds off the WORLD record.  He lost nothing in defeat and the acceleration Animal Kingdom showed at the finish is something that will be talked about way past this race.  Whichever way you look at it, no Kentucky Derby winner has come back in a Breeders Cup turf race and almost pulled it off.  It was great to see Memo (groom) and Alice (assistant) run up to him all smiles after the race as I’m sure by their reaction he thought he had won anyway!  Also, knowing AK he probably loved the fact that everyone was looking at him – he’s such a show off!

Interesting note from the British Racing Post:

“John Velazquez had been aboard Animal Kingdom when he triumphed beneath the twin spires at Churchill Downs last year, but the prospect of another opportunity to partner the revitalised Wise Dan proved too tempting to resist.

Velazquez sided with Wise Dan and was proved right, but only by a length-and-a-half margin that perhaps overstated one horse’s superiority over the other.”

Looking at the chart he seemed to be the only one who got into trouble

This is the beginning of AK’s year whereas with a lot of these horses they’ll be wrapping it up.

Love the photo below taken by Maggie.  Everyone looks happy and not sure what or who AK is looking at – probably posing for photo’s in case anyone is taking!

Again, well done to all the participants and thanks for a great couple of days racing.

With all of this evening’s excitement I forgot to mention our big winner of the day!  Onepointhreekarats toiled it out in sunny Laurel to win her second allowance race by 4 1/4 lengths.  Congratulations to Live Oak Plantation.{jcomments on}
