An Early Summer Storm

Isivunguvungu (SAF). We’re constantly asked a) how to pronounce it and b) what it means. It’s the Zulu word for “storm.” And today at Laurel Park, it meant “winner.” Track announcer Dave Rodman had no trouble with the moniker while calling the race, and jockey Jorge Ruiz very obviously became Isivunguvungu’s newest devoted fan – watch the replay if you can. Jorge pats and strokes the gelding all the way back to the winner’s circle. Wonderful.

“He’s a great horse,” Jorge said. “I’ve followed his entire campaign in South Africa. I’m happy about the opportunities Graham and his whole team are giving me, and especially about riding for Hollywood Racing. I dream of winning Grade 1 races. Congratulations to the owners.”

A multiple Grade 1 winner in his native South Africa, Isivunguvungu is an absolute celebrity there. When he arrived here at Herringswell in May 2024, he brought with him a massive fan following. And those folks are loyal, delighted by every photo and bit of news about their hero.

They are no doubt elated today. Entered in an allowance optional claiming race going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, Isivunguvungu was making his first start since the Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs last August 9.

Now 8, Isivunguvungu is by What A Winter (SAF) out of Miss Tweedy (SAF) by Tiger Ridge. Today was career win number eight from 22 starts. We’re happy to join Jorge in a big Cheers to the connections – breeders Narrow Creek Stud and owners Hollywood Racing. We’ll even say it in Zulu:  Ukuhalalisela!!
