A Cliffhanger at Woodbine

It was so close, even her rider thought they’d won. Crystal Cliffs (FR) and Rafael Hernandez missed winning the Canadian Stakes Presented by The Japan Racing Association-G2 at Woodbine yesterday afternoon by what literally appeared in the photo to be a nostril. There are tough beats….and then there are tough beats.

So maybe it wasn’t a win, but consider this a well-deserved appreciation post. This mare is truly The Little Engine That Could. Never off the board in any of her ten career starts, yesterday’s typical Herculean effort brought her stats to 10-4-4-2 and $266,452 earned.

By Canford Cliffs (IRE) out of the Lord of England (GB) mare Preciously (FR), the 5-year-old was bred in France by M. L. Bloodstock, Ltd. She is owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC and Wonder Stables.

Registered as bay, Crystal Cliffs (FR) is distinctive because of the frosting of white hairs across her flanks and hindquarters….something her opponents have seen quite a lot of!
