A Double at Laurel Park

Jockey Feargal Lynch posed for Herringswell win photos twice this afternoon at Laurel Park – first on Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Albert Frassetto’s PIQUA and then again an hour later on ZATIP for Wertheimer & Frere.

Piqua, 3, was making just his second career start after a layoff since his debut at Saratoga last August. He finished third in that maiden special weight going 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Back in the same condition today, he led from the start, lost the lead only briefly down the backstretch before rallying to take over and shake clear, winning by 3/4 lengths. By Speightstown out of Pickaway (IRE) by Pivotal (GB), the gelding was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, LLC.

Wertheimer & Frere’s homebred 3-year-old colt Zatip is by Tapit from the graded stakes winning mare Zaftig, by Gone West. Also back off a freshening, he broke his maiden in his second start last October at Keeneland and faced allowance company going 7 furlongs on the dirt today. He stumbled just after the break but recovered well to maintain the pace with the leaders. Into the stretch, he dug in to get past a tenacious Friar Tuck and win by a length.

Congratulations to the owners and to Feargal Lynch on the pair of wins!
