A Jersey Girl on the Jersey Shore

It’s always a return to their roots when Mrs. Isabelle de Tomaso’s homebreds venture up to Monmouth Park, and SPEIGHTFULELECTION broke her maiden there in grand style this afternoon. She came close in her last effort at Gulfstream on April 20 – finishing second by a half-length – but the 3-year-old daughter of Speightster and Landslide Election (by Artie Schiller) left no doubt today.

She was sent off as the 3/5 favorite in the 5 1/2 furlong turf sprint under Paco Lopez. It was great fun to hear the comments by Rajiv Maragh on the America’s Day At The Races broadcast on Fox Sports. Rajiv is very familiar with those gold and maroon striped silks – he wore them aboard Irish War Cry in his 2017 Wood Memorial Stakes-G2 win and his second place finish in the Belmont Stakes-G1.

Rajiv commended Paco on his winning ride, stating “He sat off the speed perfectly positioned and let the duel go on in the stretch.”

Speightfulelection held off a fast-closing Stage Presence to win by 3/4 lengths. Congratulations to Mrs. de Tomaso on another terrific Monmouth win!
