A Memorable Saratoga Win

Exactly one month ago today, things did not go well for MEMORIALIZE in her debut at Colonial Downs. The chart stated she was “fractious in the gate, unprepared when the gates opened and lost iron at the break.” She spotted the rest of the field 10+ lengths, and it took jockey Jorge Ruiz half the race to get his foot back securely in the stirrup. Once corrected, the pair swung out about five wide, hustled down the stretch and finished second, just 2 1/2 lengths behind the winner.

Today at Saratoga, however, Memorialize meant to turn the tables. Manuel Franco had the mount in the 8 1/2 furlong maiden special weight on the inner turf.  Heading into the first turn, the pair sat 7 lengths off frontrunning Candy Lover. Rounding the final turn, they started swallowing up ground and picking off rivals. Headed by favorite Lamorna into the stretch, Memorialize had the advantage and turned that filly away with authority. “Clear cut – romping home by four,” announcer Frank Mirahmadi said. She was very much the best today.

Breeder/owner Gainesway Thoroughbreds clearly has another very talented daughter of 2014 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Karakontie (JPN), also the sire of their Grade 1 winner Spendarella. Two-year-old Memorialize is out of the stakes-placed Smart Strike mare Smart Emma. Congratulations to Antony Beck and his team at Gainesway on her maiden-breaker at Saratoga.
