She took her name literally today. HIT THE ROAD BRAT took the van headed down 95 to Laurel Park and broke her maiden at first asking on another sunny, warm and gorgeous day here in Maryland. Victor Carrasco got the call and was aboard for the win in the one mile maiden special weight on the turf.
Breaking from the #1 slot, they settled comfortably just off the early leaders and saved ground down the backside. Into the stretch, Hollywoodland appeared to pull away from the field, but Victor swung out and showed Hit The Road Brat plenty of daylight. She kicked on and hit the wire 1 1/2 lengths the best, ears up.
This is another special filly bred and owned by Alex G. Campbell, Jr. Thoroughbreds, LLC. The late Mr. Campbell loved his horses, and this 3-year-old is a daughter Quality Road and his multiple graded stakes winner Ultra Brat (by Uncle Mo). That name should be familiar; among her six wins while here in the barn were the Tropical Park Oaks, the Marshua’s River Stakes-G3, the Gallorette Stakes-G3 and a second place finish – by a nose – to Sistercharlie (IRE) in the 2018 Diana Stakes-G1 at Saratoga.
We know that Mr. Campbell’s longtime assistant (and Mean Mary’s namesake!) Mary B. Venezie is especially pleased with Hit The Road Brat’s impressive debut today. Cheers to Mary and the team!
