Busy Holiday Weekend

This President’s Day weekend is a busy one for Herringswell runners, highlighted by the much-anticipated 4-year-old debuts of both 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and last year’s Wood Memorial victor, Toby’s Corner.

Team Valor’s Animal Kingdom, with John Velazquez up, faces five rivals in an optional allowance this afternoon at Gulfstream Park.  It is the fifth race on their card with a post time of 2:25 p.m. EST.

On the west coast, 3-year-old Lucky Chappy will carry the Team Valor banner in the $200,000 El Camino Real Derby (G3) at Golden Gate Fields.  The High Chaparral colt will be ridden by Alan Garcia.  The field of ten will enter the gate at 4:43 p.m. PST/7:43 p.m. EST.

On Monday, Mrs. Dianne Cotter’s Toby’s Corner returns to the races in Laurel’s General George Handicap (G2).  Eddie Castro has the mount.  Top-weighted at 121 lbs. in the seven-horse field, Toby will square off against Caixa Eletronica from the Todd Pletcher barn and Tim Keefe’s Eighttofasttocatch who, incidentally, was bred by Herringswell and Dark Hollow Farm.
