Check the Label Strikes Gold

CheckTheLabelGardenCity2010AC298Flashback to Memorial Day at Belmont Park. As Check The Label returned to winner’s circle after capturing the Grade II Sands Point, Gypsy’s Warning barreled down the Monmouth Park stretch to grab the Grade III Eatontown Stakes by a nose.

Now fast forward to this past Saturday, Septemeber 18. Check the Label returned to Belmont Park. This time for the Grade I $250,000 Garden City. When the 3-year-old Stormin Fever filly scored in the Grade I, connections smiled and exchanged congratulations in the winner’s circle. The trophy was presented.

{jcomments on}North towards Lake Erie, Lucky Strikes Gold (Smart Strike- Alice Springs) debuted a winner in a 6-furlong maiden special weight at Presque Isle downs. The chestnut 2-year-old filly split horses like she’d done this before, to get up by a neck at the wire. She had played the ‘Gypsy’s Warning role’ like a professional.

Check the Label entered the Garden City on a three race win streak. A graded stakes win streak. Scores in the Grade III Appalachian, Grade II Sands Point and Grade III Virginia Oaks made her the even-money choice in Saturday’s Garden City.

As the Grade I group broke from just past the wire on the inner turf course, Queen Of The Creek set off in typical fashion setting demanding splits of :23 1/5 and :47 4/5. The unhurried Check the Label was content to run her half-mile in :49 3/5, spotting the front-running second choice nearly two seconds.

As the field approached the far turn, jockey Ramon Dominguez steered Check the Label from the inside to the three path but was steadied due to the tiring of the Jim Toner trained Triple Cream at around the 3/8 pole. Dominguez then tapped on the breaks to created room from himself and the wall of horses. Dominguez then swung wide(r) to take a shot at the leaders. Once daylight was spotted, Check the Label swallowed ground, gained the lead at the furlong marker and dug in determinely to pass-and-not-be-passed from there on out.

The race is one thing.

After a quick audible was called due to the rained-off-the-turf Grade II Lake Placid in August, Check the Label was forced to train up until her Garden City triumph. She breezed on August 8, August 15, August 28, September 4 and September 11. With the trade of the Lake Placid for three breezes, Check the Label hardly noticed the difference.

As for a next possible start for the streaking-filly, the Grade I Queen Elizabeth II at Keeneland on October 16 has been a popular mention, although no plans have been carved in stone.

One thing we will try to coordinate is a stablemate’s post time shortly Check the Label’s in her next start.
