Fortune Racing LLC’s CANDY LIGHT warmed up a chilly Boxing Day with a score in the $100,000 Tropical Park Oaks at Gulfstream Park this afternoon. It seemed odd to see so many folks bundled up in coats in south Florida, but not even that part of the country has been able to escape the deep freeze of the past few days.
The 3-year-old Candy Ride (ARG) filly ticked off a few boxes with today’s win, earning her first stakes victory while also setting a new track record of 1:40.39 on the Tapeta surface (all races were taken off the turf today) with Jose Ortiz aboard. Candy Light has really come into her own this fall, hitting the board in her last three starts. She was third in the listed Woodford Reserve Virginia Oaks at Colonial on Sept. 6 behind Spirit and Glory (IRE), who finished 4th in today’s outing. Next at Keeneland on Oct. 13, Candy Light bested a large field to win an allowance under Joel Rosario. In her last start, Aqueduct’s Winter Memories Stakes on Nov. 13, she was second to Salimah (IRE), who faces Grade 1 company – including Herringswell runners Sparkle Blue and Pizza Bianca – later today in the American Oaks at Santa Anita.
It should also be noted that Candy Light earned the Best Turned Out Horse award before today’s race!
Candy Light was bred in Kentucky by Gary & Mary West Stables, Inc. from the Pioneerof The Nile mare Queen Yolanda. She was a $200,000 purchase from the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s June sale of 2-year-olds in 2021. Huge congrats to Fortune Racing LLC on both the stakes win AND the new track record!
