He’s been with us for his entire career, and today ENGLISH BEE earned Herringswell’s first win for 2023. Now 7, Calumet Farm’s homebred son of English Channel – Evil Kitten (by Kitten’s Joy) is an accomplished veteran with earnings of over $550,000. He won at first asking as a 2-year-old in 2018, and counts among his victories Pimlico’s James W. Murphy Stakes on Preakness Day 2019 and the New Kent County Virginia Derby-G3 at Colonial Downs later that summer.
With Luis Saez aboard, he was coming back off an 8-month layoff this afternoon in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park. He broke sharply and looked comfortable down the backstretch, sitting just behind early leader Proven Strategies before Saez engaged Sky’s Not Falling and Bay Street Money on the turn. Even-money favorite Mouillage (FR) came running late, but English Bee dug in and just wasn’t going to let him pass.
As a side note, here’s a remark you don’t often find in a race chart: “the field swept past a wayward waterfowl past the quarter pole.”
It was great fun seeing this guy run so well today, as well as getting the Best Turned Out Award. We congratulate Calumet Farm on another win with him!
