Hail To The Chief!

After two wins at Pimlico this afternoon, our cup truly runneth over when HIGHLAND CHIEF (IRE) pulled off a huge upset at Belmont Park in the Man O’War Stakes-G1 with Trevor McCarthy in the irons.

Mrs. Fitriani Hay’s beautiful homebred 5-year-old son of Gleneagles (IRE) – Pink Symphony (GB), by Montjeu did exactly what Graham was hoping he would do: he broke well. Such was not the case for Breeders’ Cup Turf and Eclipse Award winner Yibir (GB), who stepped out slowly and banged the side of the gate on his way. Trevor sat second throughout, just off the flank of early leader Abaan. When asked in upper stretch, Highland Chief (IRE) motored to the front. He was challenged by both Yibir (GB) and multiple graded stakes winner Gufo, neither of whom could get to him.

The Man O’War was Trevor McCarthy’s first Grade 1 victory, and he clearly fought back tears during his post-race interview with Maggie Wolfendale.  It was quite the emotional win for all of us here at Herringswell, too. Trevor began riding out for us at age 15 (which barely seems that long ago to some of us!), and we’ve watched him become a top rider, a husband, and most recently, a father. How absolutely fitting that this monumental achievement came on a horse for Graham. We could not be more proud!

Massive congratulations to Mrs. Hay on this exciting and meaningful win!
