King For The Day

It was one of those postcard-perfect afternoons at Colonial Downs in New Kent, Virginia, and KING VEGA (GB) enjoyed a 1 1/8 mile romp on the lawn in the $150,000 Buckland Stakes with jockey Angel Suarez.

Breaking from the 9 hole, the 4-year-old gelding was sharp from the start, tugging Angel to the lead to set the pace. He relaxed down the backstretch, skimming over the firm turf. In front at every pole, the pair pulled away in the stretch and galloped all the way to the wire.

King Vega (GB) spent his 2- and 3-year-old seasons running in England. He came to Herringswell last November and made his first start for Graham at Keeneland on April 13. He first teamed up with Angel at Delaware Park on June 18, resulting in a win in an allowance optional claiming race. Back a month later on July 18 at Colonial in an NW2x, they finished second.

“Love this horse,” Angel said. “Jocks have to be prepared and go out there with Plan A and Plan B. Once the gate opened, I had to go with Plan B. There was no speed in the race, and King Vega (GB) broke so well that I let him get comfortable and didn’t fight him. He wanted to run like a front runner today, so I let him do so and it worked out good. We definitely had some fun out there today! Always pleasant to ride good horses like King Vega (GB).”

HPG Thoroughbreds, LLC owns this son of Lope de Vega (IRE) – Moi Meme (GB), by Teofilo (IRE). He was bred by Fortescue Bloodstock. Congratulations to all of the connections on this first stakes win!
