Laurelin (IRE) Stays Undefeated In Penn Oaks Win

She’s a flawless four-for-four. LAURELIN (IRE) continued to show her quality this evening, winning Penn National’s black type Penn Oaks. This was her third stakes win, added to her victories in the Memories of Silver Stakes at Aqueduct on April 27 and the Tepin Stakes there last November 17.

Oaks wins seem to be a wonderful recurring theme for us of late. Laurelin follows Fondly’s wins in the Virginia Oaks on March 15 and the Delaware Oaks-G3 two weeks ago.

Jorge Ruiz, who won earlier in the day on Naptown, made the drive from Laurel to Penn National for the mount on Laurelin. It was his first time on the filly; she has been ridden in her three previous starts – all in New York – by Kendrick Carmouche.

“She has a lot of class and a lot of potential,” Jorge said.

Another rider who knows her well – he is frequently on her in the mornings – is Herringswell exercise rider Kevin Lundie. Almost immediately after she crossed the finish line, Kevin texted “What a superstar! I love that filly……wow!”

So do her owners, Steven and Jessica Jell of Newstead Stables, LLC. Bred in Ireland by M. H. Dixon and Mount Coote Estates, 3-year-old Laurelin is by Zarak (FR), the Aga Khan’s millionaire winner of the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (Gr. 1) and the Dubai Millennium Stakes (Gr. 3). Huge congrats to ALL on another exciting win by this very special filly!
