Maith an bhean!

That’s how you say “Well done!” to an Irish girl….and Thegirlfromireland gets the congratulations today! We mentioned horses for courses in our last post, and the same can be said in this filly’s case. She made her first two career starts in New York last fall and then wintered at Tampa Bay Downs. But she’s actually the girl from Maryland (and a very pretty one), and she’s made it clear she enjoys winning at Laurel Park!

Her first victory came there in a maiden special weight on April 16. In her next start, she stepped up to allowance company on Preakness Day at Pimlico, finishing third behind stablemate Amani’s Image. Jorge Ruiz has been in the saddle for all three of her starts here in Maryland and both of her wins.

Going a mile on the turf, she bested nine rivals after entering the gate as the co-favorite. She “advanced three deep leaving the far turn, gained the lead in upper stretch, went clear in mid-stretch and prevailed under steady handling.” Track announcer Dave Rodman had a some fun with an Irish accent while calling the race.

Thegirlfromireland is a 3-year-old homebred for Tim Rooney’s Shamrock Farm by Goldencents out of the More Than Ready mare Tattoed Girl. So here’s another “Well done!” for Mr. Rooney and his team at the farm!
