She went off as the 6/5 favorite, and she ran like one. MISS SAN GABRIEL was keen out of the gate under Jorge Ruiz, going straight to the lead on the Pimlico turf course. Negra Gata sat glued to her flank down the backstretch, but Jorge had tons of horse under him into the turn. When asked, she easily distanced herself from the rest of the field, cruising under the wire “to win by some five or six,” according to track announcer Dave Rodman.
This was the 3-year-old filly’s third start. She ran once as a 2-year-old at Colonial Downs last July, finishing third. Back for her sophomore debut on April 15, she was a close fourth in a six-furlong maiden special at Aqueduct. Graham stretched her out today, and she clearly relished the added distance.
Miss San Gabriel was bred in Kentucky by Hannah Windom and Gary Friedrich. By Temple City out of the Artax mare Here Comes Frock, she is owned by Robert LaPenta, Madaket Stables LLC and ERJ Racing, LLC, in whose silks she won today.
Congratulations to all!
