As trainer Graham Motion accepted this year’s Big Sport of Turfdom Award, he noted the importance of using the media spotlight to promote the sport of Thoroughbred racing.

Motion accepted the award, presented by the Turf Publicists of America to acknowledge industry participants who promote racing through their work with track publicists and the media, at a luncheon Tuesday during the Symposium on Racing and Gaming presented by the University of Arizona’s Racetrack Industry Program in Tucson, Arizona.

“It has become harder and harder to find racing coverage in daily newspapers, except for the five weeks of the Triple Crown,” said Motion, who saddled Animal Kingdom to a victory in this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). “That was the reason I felt it was so important, really my responsibility, to be available.”

Bill Knauf, president of the Turf Publicists of America and assistant vice president of Thoroughbred racing at Monmouth Park, said Motion was available at big tracks and small tracks and always tried to be positive.

“Our members had a common theme in describing Graham, ‘He is a class act. He always makes himself available,’ ” Knauf said. “I think the way he handled himself after the close loss by Animal Kingdom in the Preakness Stakes (G1) said a lot. He was still out there, with a smile, talking with television, print, and web media. It’s a testament to his character.”{jcomments on}
