Six Degrees of Separation: Kentucky Derby Edition

There will be quite the reunion among Maryland connections on the Churchill Downs backstretch next week.  Team Valor’s Went The Day Well leads the charge for Herringswell; Graham travels to Louisville on Tuesday.  Our Fair Hill neighbor Michael Matz sends out one of the Derby’s early favorites, Phyllis Wyeth’s Union Rags.  Both colts wintered at Palm Meadows in Florida but return to their Fair Hill bases after next week’s classic.

Making his first trip to the Kentucky Derby is Laurel Park’s Hamilton Smith, 67, with Skeedattle Stables’ Done Talking.  Graham and Anita have known Hammy since their early days at Laurel Park, and both were excited for the trainer after his colt’s victory in the Illinois Derby (G3) on April 7th.  “It will be fun having all of us at the Derby together,” Anita said.  “We’ll be like country cousins down there!”

And in yet another connecting thread, Done Talking is a son of Pin Oak Stud’s Broken Vow, whom Graham trained.

Here’s wishing everyone a great week in Kentucky.  Maryland will be cheering!!
