Smooth Sailing

It might be bitterly cold in Fair Hill, but Mr. Alex G. Campbell, Jr.’s SAVAGE SAILOR certainly enjoyed the warmth of southern Florida this afternoon, winning the first race at Gulfstream Park. The 3-year-old gelding was making his fifth career start in the maiden claiming event going a mile and 70 yards on the all-weather surface. Racing three wide, he “powered clear” of Board Certified and Poetic Code to win by 2 1/4 lengths under Tyler Gaffalione.

And in keeping with what has evidently been a bit of a theme this week, Savage Sailor is another homebred. The flashy chestnut son of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is out of Mr. Campbell’s Vivacious Venezie, by Tapit. It’s always our pleasure to congratulate Mr. Campbell and his team!
