As the snow continues to drop over Fair Hill like confetti on New Years Eve, Turf Melody remained at Fair Hill on the morning of the Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct.
The 3-year-old had been set to come back after a run in the Grade III Lecomte Stakes just two weeks ago. The Whirlaway, ran at 1 1/16 miles, was originally carded with six horses but will be down to at least five with the subtraction of our Maria’s Mon colt.
Shifting gears to the West coast, Smart Bid is scheduled to run in the Grade II Strub Stakes later on today. However, the area has been doused with rain, and it continues to fall. ‘The Great Race Place’ has not hesitated to cancel racing of late as it’s main track has hand a miserable time draining. Smart Bid was last seen finishing a game second in the 1 1/16 miles San Fernando on Jan 16. The 4-year-old is listed as the 4-1 third choice in what is an extremely evenly matched field.
In what could now be considered old news, Laurel and Philadelphia Park has put a hold on Herringswell Stables’ plans. On Friday, Laurel announced its cancellation of Friday and Saturday’s card. Philadelphia quickly followed with a cancellation of their own. Ruse, a 3-year-old for Stone Farm was scheduled to run Friday.
On a positive note, Snowmaster captured a first level allowance race at Santa Anita on Wednesday for Darley and Rafael Bejarano. The 4-year-old son of Maria’s Mon begged for more distance of late and got what he was looking for when Santa Anita carded a 1 1/4 miles race for horses that have not won a race other than maiden, claiming or starter.
In Florida, we are without runners on the first Saturday of February. However, Kapsiliat and Cat Park will head to the races on Super Bowl Sunday. Kapsiliat (Jeremy Rose) will make her first start for Herringswell in a maiden on the turf. Cat Park makes his first start since finishing a close third in the Tropical Park Derby. Edgar Prado will ride the Tale Of The Cat son.
