Although she didn’t win, Photo Call ran on ground listed as good today in the Filly And Mare Turf. Her best races have been on firm ground so she was at a disadvantage. She was 5th in a blanket finish between 3rd, 4th and 5th (the naked eye could not split them), and was only caught near the wire by the 1st and 2nd horses, who were already proven on yielding turf. On her preferred ground I am convinced she would have taken off and they would really have had to work hard to get to her. Well done sweet girl.
Three ‘feel good’ moments’ today was the win by Runhappy in the Sprint, trained by Maria Borell. Apart from breaking a track record, she’s a young trainer with only 5 previous winners, he was her first Breeders Cup runner, and he was ridden by…….Edgar Prado! The videos beforehand of him also brought home to viewers what a laid back horse he is!
The second was Tepin beating the boys (always like that), convincingly in the Breeders Cup Mile.
Third – American Pharoah – no words, just pure greatness which will go down in history.
Meanwhile, north of the border, Dido bagged her first Graded Stake place today when finishing 3rd in the Grade III Maple Leaf at Woodbine. Previously placed in ungraded Stakes this was a jump up, so good for her!
