Song For a Sunday

She broke her maiden at Churchill Downs on June 3, and this afternoon PHAROAH’S SONG earned career win number two. And until today, all six of her career starts took place at different racetracks. This Laurel contest was her second at the Maryland track; it was a 1 1/16 mile allowance on the Kelso turf course.

We’ve said this a few times before – jockey Jorge Ruiz demonstrably loves his mounts, and today was no exception. He took a minute during the warm-up to allow Pharoah’s Song to stand and watch the goings-on, patting and stroking her neck the entire time. Breaking from the #1 slot, they held their position on the rail into the first turn and down the backstretch. She briefly tugged a bit when Jorge asked her to rate behind the two front runners, but accelerated easily out of the turn and into the stretch. Leader Tequilera battled on gamely, but Pharoah’s Song prevailed by 3/4 length as they crossed the wire.

The 3-year-old filly by Triple Crown winner American Pharoah is out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Two Step Song. She was bred in Kentucky by Machmer Hall, and she won today for owners River Oak Farm and Michael W. Olzewski. Congratulations to all!
