The Grey Wizard (IRE) Back in the Winner’s Circle

The definition of virtuoso is “one who excels in the technique of an art.” Next to that definition, there should appear of photo of Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez.

Johnny was in the saddle when THE GREY WIZARD (IRE) scored his first North American victory in an allowance at Santa Anita on January 20. They paired up again two weeks later in the San Marcos Stakes-G3, finishing fifth. He was back aboard the stunning gray son of Caravaggio for his allowance win at Keeneland today going 1 1/2 miles on the turf.

Now 4, The Grey Wizard is out of Fancy (IRE), by Galileo (IRE). He was bred in Ireland by Longfield Stud and made his first two career starts there, breaking his maiden at Dundalk on March 4, 2022. Purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Albert Frassetto, he made his first U.S. appearance at Laurel Park last June 26. He is graded stakes placed, finishing second in the Caesar’s Jockey Club Derby Invitational Stakes-G3 during the Belmont at the Big A meet on September 17, and again at Del Mar’s Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes-G2 on November 25.

Today’s win brought his record to 10-3-3-0 with $358,181 in earnings. Congratulations to Eclipse and Mr. Frassetto!
