Twist ‘n Twirl Gets There

The brown and white silks of Hillwood Stable LLC are a familiar sight at Mid-Atlantic racetracks; Mrs. Ellen Charles has long been one of Maryland’s leading breeders and owners. Today those silks were in the winner’s circle at Laurel Park thanks to Twist n’ Twirl, her 3-year-old homebred son of Twirling Candy – Access to Charlie by Indian Charlie.

Before this afternoon’s race, the dark bay gelding had four thirds from four starts. Jockey Victor Carrasco saved ground on the rail, settling mid-pack down the backstretch on Laurel’s Bowl Game turf course. They seemed bested by the 1/16th pole until Carrasco split rivals and hit the gas pedal. Twist n’ Twirl saw daylight and decided today was his day, getting to the wire a neck ahead of second-place finisher Ripken (speaking of familiar Maryland names….).

Congratulations to Mrs. Charles!
