Under Control was born in Brazil in 2008. He came to us as a three year old, starting his career on the dirt for his first race and then switching to grass for his second, which he won. Thereafter he was always a turf horse and became a Stakes winner and Stakes placed. As he got older, like a lot of the older ‘gentlemen’ in the barn he lost a step so rather than run him in claiming races the owners Live Oak Plantation very kindly decided to retire him and give him to Mary Motion. He was never pleased about going onto the van but the day Mary came to get him she led him out of his stall with just a halter and lead rope, straight on to the waiting trailer. He didn’t blink an eyelid – he was retired and he knew it!
He now lives just a mile up the road on a farm backing on to Fair Hill, where he doesn’t have to trailered anywhere, just get on and go. Below is a video that Mary posted on Facebook, taken from her helmet cam.

Under Control was not happy as a trail riding horse and thankfully Mary new him well enough to realize that – she felt he needed a job. She brought him back to Fair Hill where she has been teaching him to pony and boy, is he good at it! Even on his first day he helped a filly get going, thought he had to set off galloping with her, realized he didn’t, and meandered off to his next lesson!
