“Howie” came to Herringswell Stables as most of them do, as a two year old. He ran just the one time at the end of the year. Being a Maryland bred he did most of his racing in Maryland, winning Stakes, including Graded Stakes as he got older, although he did win a Grade 3 at Monmouth. He was one of those horses who got better with age……
Just Howard was named MD Bred Horse of the Year in 2017 and we were so proud of him.
As a full horse he was so kind – never bit or nipped and loved having a girl in the next door stall to him. He never got worked up, just content! If a colt or gelding was put next door he sulked!!! When we heard he was going off to Gorey Smith’s Farm in South Carolina to be a stallion when his career finished after 5 years we wondered how that would work!! Apparently it worked very well – he didn’t have a lot of mares at the small farm but he had a great life for two years until he sadly passed away from colic at the end of 2022. As you can imagine, when any horses leaves us early it’s devastating, but Just Howard was a son of the late great English Channel, so who know where his career would have taken him.
